Moorabbin Airport is safely building a sustainable future for aviation, business and our local communities. Solidifying our commitment to providing safe, sustainable infrastructure and facilities that meet the needs of our customers, the Australian Airports Association (AAA) named Moorabbin ‘Metro Airport of the Year’ for our airfield improvement project at this year’s National Airport Industry Awards.
The AAA Awards recognise and honour the hard work, resilience and achievements of AAA members over the past financial year and offer an opportunity for the airport community to come together and celebrate each other.
Moorabbin Airport’s award acknowledges excellence for the delivery of a ‘Safe, Sustainable and Improved Airfield’ – a five-year, $15 million project, that will benefit our customers and communities well into the future.
- Project highlights:
- 460 new LED runway and taxiway lights, reducing power consumption by 86%
- 135,000 sqm multi-runway pavement reseal
- Replacement of 39 MAG signs, radio frequency signs and 350+ airfield markers, cones, and gables
- Storm water dry retarding basin - 175,000 sqm of infrastructure engineered and constructed (equivalent of 65 Olympic pools) to manage 1:100-year event
- Taxiway hotspot improvement program - decommissioning 1km of part taxiways on five areas to provide students fewer physical opportunities to cross active runways
- Security upgrades including palisade fencing, signage and airside access controls
- Airside parking extended – Stage one constructed for 50+ fewer active aircraft (75% occupied).
Commenting on receiving the award, Paul Ferguson, CEO, Moorabbin Airport, said:
