November 2022
At Moorabbin Airport, we’re safely building a sustainable future for aviation, business and our local communities. In March 2023, we’ll be submitting a new draft Master Plan for Moorabbin Airport.
The most important item of note is that the existing western boundary, on the main apron, will remain unchanged - as set out in the 2015 Master Plan.
Overview of the 2021 Master Plan
- The Master Plan will support positive outcomes for the community and Victoria, including:
- Airspace capacity of 375,000
- Parking for 720 aircraft
- Training for 1,800 student pilots
- 23,100 jobs (direct and indirect)
- $1.2 billion of economic activity
Sustainability matters
Moorabbin Airport has invested $250 million in new sustainable developments since 2015, with Airport customers and other stakeholders contributing $70 million for their business requirements. We have delivered our first five-star green star as built building, rolled out 2,100kW of solar generation and we’ve planted over 2,000 drought tolerant trees. We aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025. Our Master Plan will demonstrate our commitment to sustainable initiatives including Airport Carbon Accreditation by FY23, waste management, renewable energy generation, water conservation, and actively managing supply chains.
Safety first
As Melbourne’s leading training airport, safety has been our highest priority over the past 73 years. As the airport changes and adapts to accommodate the needs of the aviation community and the complex and varied ecosystems it serves, our goal is not only to meet but exceed acceptable safety performance targets and embrace new performance-based measures. The Master Plan will continue to deliver safe airport infrastructure and services to support safe aviation activity.
It also details upgrades of the airfield precinct including:
- Resealing of runways and taxiways
- Rewiring of airfield lighting and upgrade to LED
- Installation of extensive storm water drainage networks
Aviation
Moorabbin Airport was purpose-built to support flight training in 1949. Our extensive experience in aviation training and education continues to provide economic benefits to the aviation sector, the City of Kingston and its people. General aviation and flight training industry growth initiatives will continue.
These include:
- Apron and aircraft parking enhancements with more than 10,000 sqm to be improved in the next 12 months
- Aviation careers awareness program, in its third year, reaches 65 schools and 10,000 youth in South-east Melbourne
- An expansion site for the Moorabbin Air Museum to assist with the renewal and improvement of the existing facilities
Collaboration
We will fulfil our vision for Moorabbin Airport by safeguarding the airport through growth, positive development, and collaboration within our community. Our team will progressively meet with stakeholders regarding the Master Plan and our vision for the future
