Delivered by Goodman Group, the projects demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and innovation, further cementing Moorabbin Airport’s reputation as a prime location for non-aviation activity.
Paul Ferguson, CEO of Moorabbin Airport, says the projects mark a significant milestone in Moorabbin Airport's evolution as a business precinct in addition to existing aviation work.
“Together with Goodman Group, these developments form part of our efforts to upgrade our infrastructure in a way that is responsive to change. It’s about creating a diverse, vibrant business hub that can benefit everyone—our customers, local businesses, airport users, and the wider community.”The developments’ innovations in sustainability demonstrate the Airports commitment to its environmental responsibilities, says Ferguson.
“We're actively working to reduce our environmental footprint as set out in the Moorabbin Airport Master Plan. We’ve installed 1,700kW of solar, rainwater tanks for water capture and recycling, and maintained 2,000 drought tolerant trees since 2015. The mass timber units demonstrate our commitment to building the long-term value and resilience of Moorabbin Airport as well as a stable platform for further growth.”
This pilot project marks Goodman’s first venture in Asia Pacific into mass timber construction as it trials innovative ways to reduce carbon emissions in its developments. The build will use 7,019 pieces (or 631 tonnes) of timber, with all waste by-product to be recycled. The timber is sourced from a reputable supplier that has undergone certification to demonstrate its commitment to sustainable forest management and that it does not contribute to forest loss.
Mass timber construction is expected to reduce the property’s embodied carbon by approximately 24% compared to conventional steel developments, while still maintaining its strength and structural integrity. The property also has 400kW rooftop solar, eight EV charging stations and smart metering to monitor and manage energy consumption. These features align with Goodman's and Moorabbin Airport’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the development's aim to achieve a 5-star Green Star Buildings rating.
The warehouse design features a striking timber colonnade, showrooms and office spaces at the front, and functional warehousing behind-the-scenes. With four versatile units ranging from 3,500 to 4,300 square metres, the spaces are designed to be combined, offering flexibility for larger customers such as bulky goods retailers, industrial users, and logistics operators.
Construction completion is expected for November 2024 and will generate 175 construction jobs.
Goodman is set to deliver an automated distribution facility for Lawrence and Hanson at 1 Second Avenue, Grange Road Precinct, Moorabbin Airport. Lawrence and Hanson is Australia’s most recognised electrical wholesaler with a strong heritage and over 160 branches. The new facility will provide the company with excellent connectivity to transport and Melbourne's major arterial road network.
The development spans 10,672 sqm, boasting several sustainable features such as 200kW rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting, electric vehicle charging points, and is targeting a 5 star Green Star Buildings rating.
Construction has commenced and is expected to generate 500 construction jobs in addition to 45 full time jobs on completion. The project is anticipated to complete by April 2025.
