August 2023
Airservices Australia has independently confirmed in the year to 30 June 2023, that Moorabbin Airport was the busiest flight training airport in Australia. Recording 237,410 movements across all aircraft types, the Airport took the top spot for the busiest training airport, as well as the busiest Victorian airport overall – accounting for 8 per cent of total Australian aircraft movements.
These outstanding results are a testament to Moorabbin Airport Corporation’s (MAC) aviation development strategy, which continues to deliver results. Carrying out the Aviation Development Plan (ADP) set forth in the current (2015) Master Plan, our $25 million invested into Moorabbin Airport’s aviation precincts over the last five years has seen the Airport achieve 100 per cent operational availability – allowing the Airport to provide not only 20,000 sqm-plus of aviation building improvements but 135,000 sqm of runway pavements resurfaced.
These continued upgrades and improvements to the Airport saw us be awarded the ‘Best Metro Airport’ Award in 2022 by the Australian Airports Association, for airfield renewal projects. During this year, Moorabbin Airport also recorded more flight training floor space leased than in the past five years. A testament to all of the Airport’s upgrades within this period, over 947,116 aircraft movements were recorded. MAC CEO Paul Ferguson says:
Our continued investment in aviation, as outlined in successive Master Plans, supports safe and industry-leading general aviation activity. Our focus strongly remains on growing safe and viable aviation activities, so we can continue to be Australia’s busiest, and best, Airport for aviation training and general aviation aircraft movements.
With MAC’s 2021 Master Plan currently being assessed by the Commonwealth government, Moorabbin Airport has forecast an ultimate practical capacity of 375,000 aircraft movements per year and, notably, the Airport is on track to reach pre-pandemic aircraft movement levels by 2024.
